Problems of Ukrainian-English translation of urbanonyms (based on the material of some names of the city of Kryvyi Rih)

The article is devoted to a complex analysis of the problems of Ukrainian-English translation of urbanonyms based on the example of the toponymic landscape of Kryvyi Rih. The relevance of the study is determined by the need to establish Ukraine's national identity and subjectivity in the international information space, to legitimize and introduce authentic Ukrainian toponymy into global discourse. The work provides a detailed analysis of the current regulatory framework for the standardization of geographical names and a comparative review of existing municipal practices for organizing address management in different regions of Ukraine. Typical translation difficulties at both the linguistic and extralinguistic levels are identified and described. Errors in transliteration, incorrect selection of dictionary counterparts, grammatical problems in reproducing declension forms and translating attributive phrases are considered. The authors critically examine the discrepancies between physical navigation in the city (address and stop signs) and the data of global digital services Google Maps and Bing Maps. The role of urbanonyms as symbols of identity and tools for decommunization and deconstruction of imperial Russian myths is emphasized. The paper concludes that there is a need for regulated standardization and the creation of a unified methodological approach to translating Ukrainian urbanonyms into English. An optimal strategy is proposed, which is based on a combination of translation (calque) of generic terms and transliteration of true onyms (descriptive words) in accordance with the norms approved at the state level. It is emphasized that the decolonization of the toponymic space must be completed not only at the level of legal decisions, but also in material embodiment, in particular through the updating of English-language databases.
