Abstract

The article is devoted to the issues of the genre specificity of documentary prose, its functions and place in modern literature. Despite the presence of a large number of concepts used in scientific discourse to designate works of documentary prose (non-fiction, non-fiction literature, documentary literature, factual prose, reportage literature), there are certain features that determine its essence, the main of which is reliance on real events (documentary nature) and a subjective view of these events (subjectivism). Among the genres of documentary prose, attention is paid to diaries and travel notes. The article, using the works of four authors of modern English-language and German-language documentary prose (A. Applebaum, F. Nicolay, Ch. Brumme, S. Orth), explores the features of the representation of the image of Ukraine and Ukrainians. Models of the reproduction of the image of Ukraine in English- and German-language works were identified: the model of historical documentary (A. Applebaum), the model of experiential documentary (F. Nicolay), the model of diary testimony of the war from the inside (Ch. Brumme), the model of travel documentary that encompasses the country as a spatial integrity (S. Orth). Based on the analysis of the works, commonalities and differences in the perception of Ukraine and Ukrainians, as well as in the ways of their representation in the works, were identified.
