Preface to the ukrainian translation of K. Popper’s Toleration and Intellectual Responsibility

Abstract

The publication serves as an introductory article to the Ukrainian scholarly translation of Karl Popper’s 1981 lecture «Toleration and Intellectual Responsibility». The author provides a historical and conceptual overview of the context in which the lecture was written and delivered. The publication emphasizes the significance of Karl Popper’s work in terms of updating, complementing, and extending his key ideas about toleration, as formulated in The Open Society and Its Enemies. The article highlights such innovations in the lecture as the development of a new professional ethic for scholars and specialists, the justification of the need to identify mistakes, mutual criticism, and self-criticism. It stresses the relevance of Popper’s fundamental reflections on toleration to contemporary challenges.
