Portrait is one of the most important artistic means of reproducing the personality in literature. Author is completely free to create a portrait characteristic of an individual belonging to a certain age, social status, gender, education, profession, inclinations of character, and in accordance with his own plan, reflects the individual and typical features of the hero. The novel “The Collector” is the first work by J.Fowles, which immediately brought him world wide fame. This work is a life story of a young collector of butterflies — Frederick Clegg, an indistinct, ugly character who could not communicate with people around him, and therefore instead of a butterfly he kidnapped a beautiful young girl named Miranda. In a pre-arranged basement of his house Miranda becomes a prisoner and eventually dies.
